Agustin Turley's blog ::CALL on the Cover of The Lawyers Weekly

Ethical               obligations               hang               over               lawyers'               heads               whether               the               lawyer               is               on               the               clock               or               off               the               clock.

Lawyers               are               held               to               a               high               standard               since               they               are               responsible               for               the               lives               and               livelihood               of               others.
What               rules               governs               the               actions               of               lawyers               and               judges?

Do               lawyers               and               judges               get               in               trouble               for               their               misconduct?

Here               are               ways               to               learn               more               about               the               ethical               obligations               and               professional               responsibilities               of               lawyers               and               judges.

The               American               Bar               Association               (ABA)'s               Model               Rules               of               Professional               Conduct               serve               as               model               rules               for               those               practicing               law.

States               can               adopt               certain               model               rules               for               lawyers               and               judges               specifically               practicing               law               in               its               jurisdiction.

Lawyers               often               find               themselves               in               trouble               for               violating               Rule               1.5               pertaining               to               "fees."               For               an               illustration               of               the               rule,               visit               the               ABA               official               website.

You               can               also               shop               the               ABA               Web               Store               for               books               and               old               court               cases               concerning               the               role               of               those               in               the               legal               profession.

For               those               interested               in               the               legal               field,               dig               deeper.

It               is               important               to               find               out               ahead               of               time               if               you               can               handle               the               role               of               an               attorney               before               you               spend               thousands               of               dollars               on               a               legal               education               just               to               be               denied               admission               to               the               bar.

This               does               happen.

You               will               need               to               determine               far               in               advance               if               you               will               be               able               to               stay               out               of               trouble               as               an               attorney               or               if               troubles               in               your               past               might               prohibit               you               from               the               practice               of               law.

Blogs,               newspapers,               and               journals               are               great               resources               to               help               familiarize               yourself               with               the               ethical               obligations               lawyers               must               abide               by.

For               instance,               North               Carolina               publishes               the               "North               Carolina               Lawyers               Weekly."               A               legal               newsletter               or               newspaper               such               as               this               will               allow               you               to               see               current               violations               and               troubling               issues               in               which               local               lawyers               have               to               appear               in               court.

Subscribe               to               a               newspaper               in               your               city               or               town               today.

Finally,               arrange               to               have               coffee               or               lunch               with               a               lawyer               in               your               city.

Ask               him               or               her               directly               what               trouble               an               attorney               can               get               into,               how               attorneys               maintain               client               and               personal               responsibility               without               violating               a               rule,               the               consequences               and               severity               of               punishment,               and               other               questions               you               may               have.

Another               option               is               to               call               an               Ethics               professor               at               a               nearby               law               school               and               explain               your               interest               in               the               topic.

Punishments               for               lawyers               vary               depending               on               the               circumstances               of               the               case               and               how               a               court               interprets               the               rule               the               lawyer               violated.

Punishments,               however,               may               include               being               subject               to               discipline,               sanctioned               by               the               court,               suspension               of               license,               permanently               or               temporarily               or               disbarment.

Thus,               lawyers               and               prospective               lawyers               have               to               take               their               interest               in               the               practice               of               law               very               seriously.
